Dog Friendly Beaches North Lake Tahoe

One of our favorite pet-friendly activities in North Lake Tahoe is taking your pup to the beach! There are several dog-friendly beaches in North Lake Tahoe to choose from. Make sure to remain mindful of your fellow visitors, as well as each beach’s individual rules. Typically, you’ll have to keep dogs on a leash, and you always have to pick up after them! Don’t forget your doggie bags!
Patton Landing – Waterman’s Landing
Location: 5166 North Lake Boulevard, Carnelian Bay, CA 96140
Parking: Small parking facility (23 spots)
Notes: Patton Landing is very easy to access! Parking spots are less than 500 feet from the beach, so it’s easy to pack everyone in and out of the car. Dogs are allowed on the eastern portion of the beach and on the café deck, but they must stay leashed. Mutt mits (or waste bags!) are available, as well. Please clean up after your pet and help keep the beach dog-friendly!
Hidden Beach
Location: Hwy 28, 1 mile south of Incline Village
Parking: Limited highway parking is available 1 mile north near Incline; parking is free, but donations are encouraged!
Notes: Hidden Beach has a few facilities, like a restroom and trash bins, but visitors are encouraged to “pack in, pack out” or “leave no trace”, as Hidden Beach is a part of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park. Your pup is welcome, as long as you keep them on a leash and clean up after them!
Lake Forest Beach
Location: Corner of Bristlecone and Aqua, Tahoe City
Parking: Limited, but available!
Note: Dogs are only allowed on one side of the beach, the west side. Look for the small bridge and dog waste bag dispenser. That’s how you’ll know you’re in the right place! There are plenty of amenities here for the public: horseshoe pits, picnic tables, and grills.
Skunk Harbor
Location: Hwy 28, 2 miles north of Spooner Lake (no signage at Forest Service gate to access road that leads to beach); south of Bliss Pond
Parking: Free! Park along Highway 28.
Note: It’s a bit of a hike up to Skunk Harbor, so beware! Those with limited mobility may have a harder time accessing the beach. There are also no facilities like picnic tables, restrooms, or trash bins, so you must plan accordingly. That being said, Skunk Harbor is a beautiful, scenic beach where you can hang out with your pup!

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the best time of year to visit Lake Tahoe with a dog?
Summer (June–September) gives you the most beach access and outdoor dining, but it’s also the busiest. For a smoother trip, plan for late spring or early fall when crowds drop, but the weather is still comfortable. Winter works too if your dog can handle snow and cold.
Are dogs allowed on all beaches in North Lake Tahoe?
No—most designated swimming beaches do not allow dogs at all, even on leash. You’ll need to stick to specific dog-friendly sections or designated beaches, which are limited. Always check signage when you arrive because rules vary by beach and managing agency.
Do I need to keep my dog on a leash in Lake Tahoe?
Yes, in most cases. Dogs are generally required to be on a leash on beaches, trails, and public spaces unless you're in a designated off-leash area like a dog park. Enforcement is strict in popular areas, especially during peak season. [fs.usda.gov]
How early should I arrive at dog-friendly beaches?
Plan to arrive by 8:00–9:00 AM in the summer. Many dog-friendly beaches have small parking lots and fill up quickly, especially on weekends. If you show up late morning, expect to park farther away or skip that spot entirely.
