When Should We Go Mountain Biking in Lake Tahoe?

The best time to go mountain biking in Lake Tahoe is from about mid-June to mid-October. Summer in Lake Tahoe is absolutely gorgeous, with temperatures in the low 80s in the day, and dropping into the 50s at night. That’s perfect weather for biking, and a nice cool night’s sleep.
Of course, the trails you want to travel will affect when you should ride, as well. Generally, we recommend against mountain biking in the winter, unless you’re very experienced and have a fat tire bike. In the spring, some trails are still hard to access because of their high elevation. You can usually start to ride lower-level trails by mid-April, and wait until June or so to tackle higher elevation trails.

North Lake Tahoe Trails
There are many trails to choose from in North Lake Tahoe, and they’re all beautiful! You’ll want to make sure you choose a trail that’s suited to your skill level, though. Here are some of our favorite trails to choose from:
Deer Creek Trail
Distance: 2 Miles downhill
Difficulty: Moderate/Intermediate
Antoine Meadows Loop
Distance: 8.6 Miles
Difficulty: Moderate/Intermediate
Fallen Leaf Lake North Shore Lollipop
Distance: 4.5 Miles
Difficulty: Moderate/Intermediate
Tahoe Rim Trail
The Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) is one of the most iconic rides in the area. It’s a long, high-elevation singletrack loop that circles the lake, and only certain sections are open to mountain bikes.
Most rideable sections sit above 7,000 feet and include sustained climbs, narrow trails, and exposed terrain. This is a better fit for intermediate to advanced riders who are comfortable riding longer distances at elevation, but there are certainly sections that are open to beginners!

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Lake Tahoe mountain biking trails beginner-friendly?
Yes, but you need to choose carefully. Stick to paved paths, mellow forest trails, or designated beginner loops—some famous routes like the Flume Trail are better suited for intermediate riders.
What time of day is best for mountain biking in Lake Tahoe?
Start early. Mornings have cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and calmer weather—afternoon winds and thunderstorms are common in the mountains and can impact safety on exposed trails.
Are there rules about when you can bike certain trails?
Yes, some multi-use trails have restrictions. For example, parts of the Tahoe Rim Trail only allow mountain bikes on even-numbered days, and some sections are completely off-limits. Always check current trail rules before riding.
How does altitude impact mountain biking in Lake Tahoe?
Most rides are above 6,000 feet, and higher elevations can leave you winded faster than expected. Plan shorter rides your first day, drink extra water, and take breaks—fatigue and dehydration hit quicker here than at lower elevations.
Can you ride e-bikes on Lake Tahoe mountain biking trails?
E-bike access varies by trail. Many singletrack trails restrict them, especially on the Tahoe Rim Trail, while certain routes and segments do allow Class 1 pedal-assist bikes. Always confirm before heading out to avoid fines or restricted areas.
What should you bring for a day of mountain biking in Lake Tahoe?
- Plenty of water (altitude increases dehydration)
- Snacks or energy food
- A repair kit (tube, pump, multi-tool)
- Lightweight layers for changing weather
Being prepared matters since many trails are remote with limited services!
Is parking difficult at Lake Tahoe trailheads?
It can be. Popular trailheads fill up quickly in peak season, especially near North Shore and East Shore access points. Arrive before 9 a.m. or plan to use a shuttle or paid parking option when available
