Whether you're seeking the perfect spot to fuel up for a day on the hill, warm up after an early morning hike, or fill up the morning after a late night out on the town, we've got everything you need to know about the best local breakfast joints. Read on for our top ten favorite breakfast and brunch spots, as well as a few insider tips to help you make the most of your meal.

1. Fire Sign Cafe, Tahoe City, CA

This Tahoe City spot is a staple among locals, and it isn't hard to see why. Family-owned since it was opened in 1978, most everything at Firesign Cafe is made from scratch, in-house. All the coffee cakes, muffins, and cobblers are housemade, as is the chorizo sausage. Even the carrot juice is made to order!

Local's Tip: If you find yourself waiting for a table on a cold morning, visit the Annex. This spot is provided by Fire Sign and patrons can grab a coffee, and read the paper - there is even coloring for the kids - while they wait.

2. Marty's CafeTruckee, CA

Located in Historic Downtown Truckee, Marty's Cafe is a quintessential mountain town diner. Owned by Chef Marty himself, and serving breakfast all day, Marty's is your go-to...even if you've slept a little later than usual. For a grown-up twist on an old standby, try the Fried Egg Sandwich with Gruyere, mixed greens and lemon aioli atop two sunny side up eggs on toasted French bread.

3. The Old Post Office Cafe, Carnelian Bay, CA

This popular, homestyle breakfast spot is housed in what was formerly a post office and is known for giant breakfast burritos and customizable egg and cheese scrambles. Sunday brunch at The Old Post Office Cafe can get crowded, so arrive early, or make this a weekday stop to fuel up before heading out of town.

4. Tahoe House Bakery & Gourmet, Tahoe City, CA

The biggest challenge at Tahoe House Bakery & Gourmet? Deciding what to order! With a full array of espresso-based beverages and almost any baked good you can imagine, it is easy for your sweet tooth to win out on a visit here. Craving something savory? Try a hot breakfast sandwich made to order.

Local's Tip: Pick up a six-pack of Tahoe House brownies to bring back to the house for dessert later in the day. You won't regret it!

5. CoffeeBar, Truckee, CA

Located behind the main drag in Historic Downtown Truckee, CoffeeBar is a caffeinated paradise for hipsters and hippies alike. Whether you go for a single-origin pour-over, black, or a chocolate mate latte with coconut milk, you'll leave ready for any action the Sierra's might bring. Order at the counter for artisan breakfast options like avocado toast with poached eggs or a breakfast burrito made with kale and sweet potato hash.

Local's Tip: On warm days, bring your four-legged companions. Dogs are welcome on the patio, and outdoor seating is available.

6. Donner Lake Kitchen, Truckee, CA

Just across the street from Donner Lake, this full-service restaurant offers an extensive breakfast menu. The Huevos Rancheros is a must-try, and once you have, we definitely recommend going back to try one of the morning specials. Donner Lake Kitchen is open daily from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm.
