One might say that the character of a truly special destination emerges in the face of a challenge, and that could not be truer than it is now.

One month ago, restaurants in California received the instruction to move all dining outdoors. While coastal destinations and those with mild year-round climates easily adapted, our Truckee community – which sees snow up to eight, even ten months out of the year – had some work to do. But not only has the community been able to adapt, historic Downtown Truckee has transformed into an outdoor dining mecca reminiscent of a European Village.

Venture down Donner Pass Road and you’ll see what were previously parking spaces on the North side of the street filled with tables and canopies. From Eats Cooking Co and Little Truckee Ice Creamery food trucks outside of The Hoppy Duck, on the west end of downtown, to Casa Baeza on the east, there is something for every set of taste buds.

Check out some of our favorites:

Pianeta Cucina Italiana

Hands down the most recommended restaurant in Truckee, Pianeta is where locals celebrate anniversaries, and birthdays, and where we take our favorite out-of-town guests. And while we hesitate to say there have been any upsides to this pandemic, we are excited to announce that for the first time, Pianeta offers an online reservation system AND expanded patio dining. Definitely worth checking out!

Casa Baeza Mexican Restaurant

Once known mainly for their cozy bar frequented by locals, and a deliciously potent margarita, this Mexican food establishment has revamped their menu and their outdoor dining space, making it worth it visit. A kids menu and jovial atmosphere make it a great choice for larger families or those with young children.

Bar of America

A classic as “all American” as Truckee itself! Bar of America’s established patio provided a bit of a head start, but the team has further expanded to meet growing demand. Another family friendly eatery, we recommend the fish tacos or BLAT – and don’t forgot to try the famous “Wet Woody”!

Moody’s Bistro

This local favorite likely boasts the biggest transition of all, with their newly constructed outdoor patio running the full block of Bridge Street between Church Street and Donner Pass Road. Looking more akin to an outdoor entertainment venue, the outdoor seating will feel more like a VIP experience than an adaptation. Not to mention a world-class food and craft cocktail menu!
